It seemed to me that if ever human attributes could be invested in a thing of metal, wood, and glass then this ancient instrument now in my keeping must long for one more chance to show what it could do. My comet-hunting career had begun 2Yz weeks earlier, on December 17th. To say the book captivated me is to profoundly understate its impact on my life. Many chapters later and well into the night, 1 was still unable to turn out the lights. As the dome opened, 1 turned to page one of Starlight Nights and read about nightfall in a distant place and time:
